Hello and welcome to the December 2023 Kelly Solution edition! My what an end to the Autumn season we had. We have a pleasantly mild Fall as we usually do and it is seeming to be a warmer December than normal. This is due to the El Niño that is happening off our coast. Usually when an El Niño happens for our part of California, we tend to see a warm and dry end to our year with then a drop in temperature and a massive increase in rainfall in the beginning months of the year.
Our last El Niño happened in 2018-2019 and we were relatively above average rainfall by a few inches of rain. “A few inches” might not sound like much, but as we should know based on what happened after the 2017 Thomas fire, a few inches of rain can cause massive amounts of damage if you are not prepared. We have all seen the road work and terraforming that has been going on throughout the county to prevent or at least mitigate the damage caused by natural phenomena that happens such as fires, high winds, mud slides, and torrential rain.
To do your part, we recommend that you inspect your gutters one time a year to see if there is an excessive amount of dirt and debris. If you see vegetation growing from your gutters, it’s time to get your gutters cleaned. If you are unable to perform the inspections yourself, then allow Kelly Cleaning to do that for you and if you need your gutters cleaned, we will waive the inspection fee!
Is it necessary to clean gutters? Yes! If gutter cleaning is neglected then you could be causing damage that could lead to an extremely costly repair bill. The damages could be as small as bent gutters, but in bouts of downpours like we’ve experienced in past El Niños your gutters could cause excessive pooling around your home or building’s foundation that could lead to wood rot, mold, and flooding.

The Celtic Holiday before Christmas
Alban Arthan, the Celtic Winter Solstice celebration, held deep significance for the ancient Celts in Ireland. Lasting from around December 21st, marking the shortest day and longest night, to the eventual return of sunlight, Alban Arthan was a festival of both cosmic and agricultural importance. The term translates to “Light of Arthur,” linking the festival with the legendary King Arthur, a figure associated with light and renewal.
During Alban Arthan, the Celts engaged in various rituals to honor the sun’s rebirth. Bonfires, representing the power of the sun, were lit to dispel darkness and encourage the sun’s return. Druids, the Celtic priests, played a crucial role, performing ceremonies at sacred sites such as Stonehenge, where the alignment of stones corresponds to the solstices.
The festival symbolized the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth, mirroring the agricultural cycles crucial to Celtic communities. As the sun strengthened, so did the hope for a bountiful harvest in the coming year. The celebration of Alban Arthan exemplified the Celts’ deep connection with nature, emphasizing the cyclical patterns of the cosmos and the perpetual renewal of life.
